Did you miss the the Tua Pek Kong festival on Pulau Ubin this year? 

Join the Singapore Heritage Society tour of three Chinese temples on Pulau Ubin and learn about the various gods of the temples and their various roles during the festival. We will start at the Fo Shan Teng Tua Pek Kong Temple in Ubin town, before walking up 200 meters to visit the hill temple. From there, we will visit the Wei To Temple to learn about the three levels of worship and the temple's deities of Malay, Hindu, Thai, and Burmese origins.

Our expert anthropologist, Dr. Vivienne Wee, will guide the tour. As a site of pilgrimage, a refuge for gods displaced from Singapore, and a repository of both memories and aspirations, the temples of Pulau Ubin are distinct to the Chinese religious landscape in Singapore.

The Big Coastal Clean Up - Kayak Expedition by Adventurepaddlers: 13 Jun (Sat) and 14 Jun (Sun)

The Big Coastal Clean Up is a worthy event organized by Adventurepaddlers where our heartland community can contribute to the preservation of Ubin's unique charms through a kayak expedition along its enchanting shoreline.

Marine litter is an environmental, economic, health and aesthetic problem. Promoting environmental awareness, this eco trip will allow you to observe, gather and properly dispose marine waste which will otherwise cause prolong habitat destruction to our ecosystem.

Come experience the kampung spirit. What better way than to cruise down the scenic waterway into the heart of our very own Ubin Island.

(Tongs and trash bags will be provided during the event.)

Talk on 'Kampong Houses in Singapore and Malaysia' by Dr Lai Chee Kien: 13 Jun (Sat)

Kampong houses are commonly found all around Southeast Asia, formerly on the main island of Singapore, and throughout peninsula Malaysia. This talk introduces the common types found in Singapore and Malaysia and the parts that make up these houses. They demonstrate how they can create a better living climate as well as make use of natural resources to create liveable spaces.

All are welcome!

About the speaker: Dr Lai Chee Kien researches on histories of art, architecture, settlements, urbanism and landscapes in Southeast Asia.  He graduated from the National University of Singapore with an M Arch. by research [1996], and then a PhD in History of Architecture & Urban Design from the University of California, Berkeley [2005]. His publications include Building Merdeka: Independence Architecture in Kuala Lumpur, 1957-1966 (2007); Cords to Histories (2013); and Through the Lens of Lee Kip Lin: Photographs of Singapore 1965-1995 (2015). He is also a registered architect in Singapore.

About Singapore Heritage Society: The Society is dedicated to the preservation, transmission and promotion of Singapore’s history, heritage and identity. Over the years, we have been involved in many projects including publishing books, organising talks and forums, and conducting heritage tours. It advances civil society viewpoints on many issues, such as the remaking of Chinatown in 1998 and the demolition of the National Library building at Stamford Road in 2001, and more recently, the historical significance and future use of the former KTM Rail Corridor and of Pulau Ubin.

Ubin Bike Adventure with Asian Detours: 13 Jun (Sat)

Cycle back in time with our guides when you join us for the Ubin Bike Adventure for Ubin Day! Your journey takes you past rustic village houses where you might even interact with the friendly residents at Pulau Ubin! And we’re not just referring to the people!

Expect to see resident wildlife such as the Malayan water monitors, hornbills and wild boars, to name a few. For the observant ones, you might even notice a mischievous monkey in the trees staring curiously at you. There will be a number of planned stops where our guides will share some local history with you. Photography enthusiasts will also find many opportunities to snap pictures of the beautiful scenery at Pulau Ubin!

This experience is limited to 20 people only, so sign up now in order to reserve your slot! Children should be at least 7 years old and be able to ride a bike proficiently. Our guides reserve the rights to turn away participants whom they assess to be unsuitable for this experience.

Meeting Point: No.34 at Pulau Ubin. From the jetty, cross the boardwalk before taking a left turn. Walk on straight (past bike rental shops) until you see “Ubin Adventures” (No. 34) on your right. It is a house in white. Our guide will be waiting to receive you there.

Natural Heritage Cycling Tour with Pedal Ubin: 14 Jun (Sun)

Are you clueless about Pulau Ubin, Singapore’s time capsule? How did Ubin get its name? Who was the German girl? Enjoy a bicycle ride in relative safety, and learn about all these and more, with cycling guides from the Toddycats, volunteer guides of the Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum!

Cycle through the scenery of kampungs, plantations, forest, quarries and mangroves, stop for a coconut or two and listen to our guides as they share with you stories of Ubin’s wildlife, past heritage and present conservation efforts.

Participants must be at least 10 years old and know how to ride a bicycle. No fitness requirement needed. Participants are to arrange their own bicycle hire on Pulau Ubin. They may also bring their own bicycles from the mainland (more about cycling on Ubin).

Kampong Tour with Ubin NParks volunteers: 13 Jun (Sat) and 14 Jun (Sun)

Take a walk with us to experience Ubin's wonderful natural and cultural heritage. The 2.2km trail takes about 2 hours to complete. The tour will start at the Ubin-HSBC Volunteer Hub and take you through the spice trees around Jelutong campsite, Butterfly Hill, Pekan Quarry, Sensory Trail Ponds, Kampong House, Old Bin Kiang School site, Toa Pek Kong Temple and end at the Wayang Stage.

You will hear about the use of spices in cooking and the interesting history of the different sites. Do you know what the Ubin-HSBC Volunteer Hub was in the 1970s? When was the Toa Pek Kong Temple built? If you would like to know, then this is an excellent introduction to the heritage of the island.

Open to all ages, children under the age of 13 to be under parental/guardian guidance. Maximum 45 participants.

Celebrate Ubin's Singapore Specials with SOSD: 13 Jun (Sat) and 14 Jun (Sun)

SG50 represents the little red dot that we’ve come to know as home. It celebrates the Singaporean spirit, signifying that our dreams are not limited by the physical size of our island nation.

Learn more about SOSD's efforts in Ubin for the past 10 months : Project SOUND (Sterilisation of Ubin and Neighbouring Dogs) seeks to trap-neuter-release-manage dogs from Ubin and neighbouring fishfarms. SOSD also rescues and evacuates dogs requiring emergency treatment against silent killers such as heartworm, tick fever and other serious injuries.

Also, join in our "KDog Photo Challenge"! Just Snap-Caption-Hashtag-Post-on-Instagram any photo taken in Ubin, on Ubin Day, with at least one KDog (short for “Kampung Dog” or Ubin Singapore Special) in the photo. Top 2 winners stand a chance to win a limited edition SOSD cashcard and waterbottle but more importantly, the Ubin KDogs get to shine in your work of art.
